We at Atkins Printing Service love to make our customers happy. This can be difficult when a customer tells us to “choose a blue”. We use the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a popular color matching system used by the printing industry to print spot colors. It includes more than a thousand shades of color, including nearly 100 “blues”. In order to be sure you are “happy” with the “blue” on the finished piece, we recommend that you see samples of the color. You can purchase PMS color palettes from a variety of vendors on the internet, ranging from simple pressmen´s kits up to chip charts and charts for different types of paper (uncoated, matte and coated). You can also ask your Atkins Printing Service salesperson to stop by with a PMS chart and allow you to look at your “blue” options.

If you are working in a computer application, the program may allow you to specify colors by indicating the Pantone name or number. This assures that you get the right color when the file is printed, even though the color may not look right when displayed on your monitor, which uses RGB (red, green, blue) to develop its color scheme. It is important to remember that PMS works well for spot colors (the process where each color is printed with its own ink), but not for process color printing which uses four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) to produce all other colors. Spot color printing is effective when the printed matter contains only one to three different colors, but it becomes prohibitively expensive for more colors. We at Atkins Printing Service want you to be happy, even when you make us “happy” with the things you do. Give us a chance to work together so we can both be happy with the production of your printed piece.
