Our History

Atkins Printing was established in 1910 by Ralph Atkins (right in above photo and seated in photo at left) as an outgrowth of his successful photography business above Levine's Clothing Store. As the company expanded it moved across the street to the basement of the building that would later house The Silver Street Tavern. In the early 1970's the company made two important moves - the shop moved into the former Center's Department Store and Edward Atkins (left in above photo) negotiated his first contract with Typographical Union Local 643 to make Atkins Printing a union-labored print shop - one of only two in the state of Maine.

Ralph Atkins II took over Atkins Printing upon his father's death and ran the company until his retirement in 2008. Today the company is owned by James, Peter and Ann Mitchell, Ralph's cousins, thus keeping alive a family business celebrating more than 100 years in business in downtown Waterville.
